Head and neck endocrine and oncologic surgery continues to evolve through technological advancements and innovation. Optimized nerve identification and preservation has been facilitated through advancements in nerve monitoring technology and techniques. Novel methods of tissue differentiation using techniques such as autofluorescence, labeled fluorescence, optical coherence tomography and others may improve ability to identify and characterize nerves, parathyroid tissue and tumor margins, among other applications. Application of minimally invasive ablative therapies is shifting the landscape of treatment for thyroid nodules.

This 1.5-day course will cover:

  • RFA
  • Neural monitoring state of the art/SLN and continuous monitoring and neural anatomy
  • Ultrasound and AI
  • Parathyroid autofluorescence probe and camera based systems and ICG
  • Neural RLN intraop imaging
  • Optical Coherence intraop imaging
  • Parathyroid vascular imaging
  • State of the art imaged based margin assessment

The course is designed for clinicians, surgeons and researchers alike who have an interest in developing and applying innovative technologies to augment care for head and neck endocrine disorders. The course will also offer an optional hands-on practical component for learners to participate in radiofrequency ablation (RFA) using phantom models (space limited).

Who Should Attend

This course is targeted to Specialty Physicians in Endocrinology, Surgery, Radiology and Nuclear Medicine and Otolaryngology.

Objectives and Accreditation

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Optimize application of intraoperative nerve monitoring in thyroid surgery.
  • Discuss cutting-edge methods to improve nerve visualization during thyroid surgery.
  • Optimally apply parathyroid autofluorescence and vascular assessment technologies to thyroid surgery.
  • Explain techniques for margin assessment in head and neck cancer surgery.
  • Discuss best practices in patient selection, pre-procedural evaluation, technique, post-procedure monitoring and assessment of efficacy for ultrasound-guided ablation of thyroid nodules.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, Harvard Medical School is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

The Harvard Medical School designates this live activity for a maximum of 11.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) ™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

We are excited to offer this learning activity and hope you’ll join us for Technology and Innovation in Endocrine Head and Neck Surgery on March 22.

Current Concepts in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery

As part of the Canadian Association of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology’s educational initiative a new course is being offered as a pre-conference option for this upcoming Canadian Society of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Annual meeting in Edmonton, AB.

Through Industry support we have been able to drastically reduce the cost of holding this course allowing us to offer this 1.5 day intensive course covering current concepts in thyroid and parathyroid surgery for a tuition fee of $195 CDN. The course enrolment limit is 40 attendees. Registration is on a first come, first served basis.

This course represents a truly pan-Canadian approach to surgical education / continuing medical education with invited faculty members from the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, Dalhousie University, McGill University, University of Toronto, and University of Western Ontario.

Location: Edmonton Conference Centre, Edmonton, AB – This is the same venue as the 2019 CSOHNS annual meeting.
